Diabetic Eye Exam

If you have been diagnosed with Diabetes, an annual eye exam can save your sight.

Diabetic eye exams include all usual tests and assessments as a regular eye exam. Additionally, our eye doctor checks for diabetic related diseases and conditions such as Retinal Detachment, Diabetic Retinopathy (Haemorrhages in the Retina), Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) etc.  Diabetic Retinopathy and DME if left untreated can cause permanent vision impairment.

What is Diabetic retinopathy?

It is a disease that damages the blood vessels in the retina and can result in vision impairment and DME.

Diabetic Macular Edema is associated with:

  • those who have had diabetes for an extended amount of time,
  • severe hypertension (high blood pressure),
  • fluid retention,
  • hypoalbuminemia (low levels of protein in body fluids),
  • and hyperlipidemia (high levels of fats in the blood).

Common symptoms of DME are blurry vision, floaters, double vision and sometimes blindness.
